The President of Ukraine inaugurated the monument of Independence in Kharkiv The monument of Independence was opened today, August, 22, on the Constitution square.
 
The solemn ceremony was carried by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych who is on an official visit in Kharkiv.
 
«We inaugurate this monument just before the Town Day of Kharkiv. The monument symbolizes the long-standing hope our fathers of old about freedom, centuries-long contest for independence. At the same time it symbolizes the aspiration and will of present-days Ukrainian people to new achievements and victories. Let this monument inspire you, dear Kharkiv citizens, to new achievements in the name of Ukraine and welfare of your city. I congratulate you on the oncoming holidays!» -  Viktor Yanukovych said.
 
Kharkiv city mayor Gennadiy Kernes, the chairman of Kharkiv regional state administration Mykhailo Dobkin, the chairman of Kharkiv Regional Council Sergij Chernov, people's deputy of Ukraine, deputies of Kharkiv city council, representatives of social organizations and Kharkiv citizens were present at the ceremony.
 
Note. The height of the figure is 6 meters, the height of the sphere is about 2,5 meters, the pedestal – 8 meters. The overall height is 16,5 meters. The pedestal is made in strict geometric form and surfaced with granite of grey color. The figure of woman and the sphere are made of bronze.
