The Mayor Igor Terekhov visited Northern Saltovka today, on 3 June, with a delegation of international partners, including representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the European Investment Bank, and the Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Estonia and Finland.
The guests inspected residential buildings that had been destroyed and cannot be rebuilt, and also got acquainted with the progress of restoration work in high-rise buildings that can be reconstructed. In addition, the delegation visited an educational institution equipped with UNHCR support and apartments where renovation and new window installation projects were implemented.
The mayor thanked Caroline Lindholm Billing, UNHCR Representative in Ukraine, for her active participation in projects to support Kharkiv residents and stressed Finland's significant role in providing safe learning environments for children during the war. Igor Terekhov outlined the main needs of the city, called for continued support and stressed the importance of joint actions in the reconstruction process.
«Kharkiv has always appreciated international support, and we are particularly grateful to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for supporting Kharkiv residents. I would also like to mention Finland, thanks to which we have another renovated, simple school shelter. Today, our main needs are windows, as winter is just around the corner and more than 50,000 damaged windows are still waiting to be replaced. We also need to restore buildings and support the education system. We have set up an underground school system because there are many people who want to study and children have the right to study in safety. But Kharkiv still needs help so that people can stay in the city and live normally», - said the mayor.
In her turn, Caroline Lindholm Billing stressed the importance of demonstrating the real needs of Kharkiv to international partners.
«We visited Northern Saltovka to see the extent of the destruction and your needs with our own eyes. The purpose of our visit is to convince our international partners that people want to stay in Kharkiv, but they need sustainable support. We have come with the ambassadors of Finland and Estonia, as well as the EIB leadership, so that they can see for themselves what Kharkiv needs and how important it is to invest resources here», - said Caroline Lindholm Billing.
