Kharkiv 2012: Academic traditions and pedagogic potential

In the field of education Kharkiv has always been among the Ukrainian leaders. Academic traditions, scientific and educational potential of the city have become a guarantee that our educational institutions, including general education, are the best in the country.

Among Kharkiv teachers there are masters of science, outstanding students, masters of sports, highly qualified and experienced resource specialists. Last year, Shitikova Larisa, a teacher of mathematics from gymnasium was honored with the highest rank – the Hero of Ukraine.

It is evident that pupils show high results with such teachers. At the end of 2012 Kharkiv pupils headed the rating of All-Ukrainian intellectual competition. In addition, six of the children became the winners of international competitions (out of eight that were held this year).

Kharkiv region leads the country in the number of scholars of the President of Ukraine. 29 pupils of our city became the scholars of the President of Ukraine in 2012. Also, 350 pupils and students get the fellowship of Kharkiv city council and city mayor.

The material base is important for achieving such results. City budget allocated 15,3 mln hrivnas for renovations. For these means 71 school and nursery school were repaired. The roofing, bathroom, kitchen and gyms were renovated there. In addition, 63 computer complexes were established all over the city and all schools of Kharkiv were provided with unlimited internet.

A lot of attention is also devoted to the health of pupils as it is a basis for intellectual development. 10 school stadiums were rearranged and equipped for diverse kinds of sports. Gymnastic grounds were installed in 19 schools . About 80% of pupils got the sanitation in school, country and sea camps this year. Besides, the city council increased expenses for meals in school and nurseries. All the first-graderers of Kharkiv receive milk for free.

Kharkiv knows that contribution to the education is the contribution in a prosperous future of the city. Therefore, one of the basic priorities for the city government is the work over the quality of upbringing and education in kindergartens and schools.
