On January 24, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Mayor Ihor Terekhov inspected the destruction in Northern Saltivka.
They also familiarized themselves with the ongoing repair and reconstruction work and talked to residents of the damaged houses.
Filippo Grandi noted that he was deeply impressed by what he saw, although he had already visited Dnipro, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia before coming to Kharkiv, and assured Kharkiv residents of further humanitarian and financial support from the UN.
‘I saw that all the cities have suffered very severe damage that is why the UN and other international organizations are helping the government and local authorities to provide first aid to those who have suffered. We are allocating funds to those in need, delivering humanitarian kits and providing psychological support to those who need it,’ said Filippo Grandi.
During the meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov emphasized the importance of demonstrating the consequences of russian aggression to the international community.
‘Kharkiv has suffered tremendously: more than four and a half thousand houses have been damaged, five hundred of them are beyond repair. But, despite everything, we are trying to reconstruct the housing where it is safe and possible so that people can return to their homes. Yes, we would like to do this as soon as possible, but there are financial difficulties. We are grateful for Mr Filippo Grandi’s personal visit and for the UN’s support throughout the war,’ said Ihor Terekhov.
